'I still have so much to learn' — these are Toshibumi Sato's (Toshi's) first words. Appearing here as a student of Koji Hiramatsu and a supporting presence, he speaks plainly of his wish to learn alongside others. The spirit of this journey — one that draws no line between teacher and learner — begins right here.

The Beginning of an Encounter

'I still have so much to learn,' says someone quietly. That person is Toshibumi Sato — Toshi.

There is something alive in those words. A person who stands in the role of teacher says, 'I want to learn alongside you.' Listening, you sense that this is not modesty — it is simply true.

The Honesty of Not Yet Knowing

Not many people can say 'I still have so much to learn' without hesitation. Especially those who find themselves in the position of passing something on.

And yet, in the world of bonsai, perhaps that is the most natural way to be. There is no completion. There is no single right answer. Something gradually comes into view only through sustained engagement — and everyone on this path knows they are still somewhere in the middle of it. Toshi simply brings that honesty with him, as it is.

Traveling Together

An introduction is where a relationship begins. Learning what kind of person someone is, what attitude they carry, what they hold dear — that becomes the first step toward walking together.

'I want to learn alongside you' — those words define the character of this journey. Not teacher on one side and student on the other, but as companions walking the same path.

The longer you sit with a tree, the more questions arise. The questions grow deeper than any answer. That is the road he too is walking.
