Wiring a Japanese Black Pine holds within it a fundamental question: why do we shape the branches at all? Holding back the apex so light reaches the weaker buds, repeating the cycle of compression to keep a tree alive as bonsai — we take our time touching the thinking that lies before technique.

What Two Trees Side by Side Reveal

A Japanese Black Pine with branches spreading in all directions, reaching as though competing for light, stands beside another that has been gently shaped with Aluminum Wire. They are placed together — not to ask which one is «better». These two trees show, in their very bodies, what the passage of time looks like in bonsai.

The Apex Is Too Strong

It is in a plant's nature to grow most vigorously at its tips. Left unchecked, the dominant apex pushes ever outward, leaving the inner branches and lower buds without light or air. Wiring the branches out horizontally is not merely about appearance. By deliberately holding back the apex, light is redirected toward the weaker parts — a considered act of keeping the whole tree in good health.

This is the true meaning of what is called Styling / Shaping. Wiring branch by branch, opening a path for light through each one — shaping the form and tending the tree are, in the end, the same thing.

Bonsai Is Compression

A tree growing in nature spreads endlessly in search of light. That is its instinct — the way it has lived across hundreds of years. Bonsai holds that tree within a pot. Left to itself, the tree will not stay contained.

And so, periodically, we bring it back. Once every three or four years, resetting from an extended state to something close to zero — this cycle forms the very skeleton of the practice of bonsai. It is not a task with an end, the continuing itself is the work, and two Japanese Black Pines quietly show us that.

The Question That Comes Before Technique

Where to place the wire, at what angle to guide a branch — that is a matter of technique. But before that, there is a prior question. How do you wish this tree to be?

The answer is not inside the tree. And yet, when you look at it carefully and at length, something gradually becomes clear.
