The movement was already inside the trunk

Which branches to turn into Jin. Where to open up space. The answers to those questions cannot be found in any textbook. They are already there, inside the tree.

Restyling is not about imposing a shape from the outside. It is the work of revealing the movement that sleeps within the material. Removing branches, creating Jin, adjusting angles with wire — each of those decisions is also an act of reading how this particular tree moves.

The commitment to cutting long

Branches destined to become Jin are always cut on the longer side. You can always shorten them later, but what has been cut too short cannot be brought back. The essence of Restyling lives inside that simple fact.

In June, the tree is drawing water up actively. That is exactly why we strip the bark now, with Jin Pliers. Reading the season, working in step with the tree's breath — perhaps there is truly no such thing as a task that can be done at any time.

The more compact it becomes, the stronger the trunk appears

There is a single guiding principle running through this Restyling: make it compact, and let the trunk speak. Removing branches, adjusting angles with wire — everything moves toward that one point.

Space is not there to reduce things. It is there to show what has been kept. Only on the far side of subtraction does the trunk's sense of Age begin to surface.

Yielding to the tree's own time

Even when today's work is done, the tree has not yet dried. The Deadwood work comes after that. No rushing. The tree's condition will tell you what to do next — not disturbing that order is the foundation of this craft.

Restyling is a journey that does not conclude in a single day. Today's work is also the act of entrusting a question to the tree — a question whose answer belongs to six months from now, or several years from now. That answer is still quietly growing, out at the tips of the branches.
