This explains the final adjustment work on an approximately 200-year-old yamadori shinpaku for the 2026 Kokufu-ten. Six months have passed since the wiring in May; in December, with the leaves grown out, the shinpaku is pruned, mainly to refine the outline of the display stand. It presents professional techniques and aesthetic judgment to gain high marks at exhibitions, including how to lift branch tips to enliven the tree, how to use shears so cut surfaces are not visible, and how to use nozoki-eda (peeking branches) to create depth and three-dimensionality.
Work Type:
Bench building, Pruning
Difficulty:
★★★★★
Tree species:

  1. It is a lovely tree, I hope I can see it at the Kokofu ten next month. Do you know if it is in the first or second part of the show?

    1. The juniper tree featured in our video will be displayed during the first part of the Kokofu-ten exhibition in early February.
