Branch Pad work comes after Wiring is complete. This process of adjusting the direction and height of each branch has a purpose beyond aesthetics: bringing light to the weaker buds. From how to raise the Back Branch to checking whether the wire is holding, it is a process of verifying with both hands and eyes as you go.
After Wiring is complete, there is one more step: Branch Pad work — adjusting the direction and height of each branch. It may look like a finishing touch, but the goal is not simply to create a pleasing shape.
The primary reason for spreading the branches is to bring light to the weaker buds. When the Branch Pad is properly arranged, light reaches all the way into the interior. When light reaches them, buds that were beginning to lose vigor come back to life. A beautiful form follows naturally once the light has found its way through.
Beauty and healthy growth are not separate goals. When that becomes clear, the Branch Pad process may start to look a little different.
When branches are arranged in a flat plane, the tree looks thin when viewed from the front. By lifting the Back Branch slightly, depth is created and the overall composition gains volume. Deliberately introducing a difference in height — that is the key to giving the Branch Pad a three-dimensional quality.
Keep even spacing between branches. Place the branch tips at the lowest point. Raise the back, draw the front toward the main line, spread outward at the tips to form a fan shape, and Tighten / Compact the whole thing radially. Stated in words it sounds like a set of rules, but until the hands have learned it, it is only a temporary map.
A finished Branch Pad is not a vague, diffuse spread — it has a taut, orderly form. Expansiveness within compactness: holding that contradiction together is both the difficulty and the pleasure of Branch Pad work.
After arranging the Branch Pad, touch each branch gently. If it moves, the wire is not holding. Re-wire, then touch again. Checking and re-wiring together form one complete cycle of Branch Pad work.
With Branch Pad work, the hands sometimes learn before the mind understands. Precise knowledge alone is not enough — there are things that only become clear when you actually touch the branches. There are sensations in bonsai that can only be reached through repetition.
Being able to try again and again also means being able to return to the tree again and again. Each time you touch it, the hands learn a little more. Somewhere beyond that accumulation, there may be a moment when things simply fall into place on their own.
