Every January in Kyoto, the Gafu-ten — one of Japan's largest Shohin Bonsai exhibitions — holds its 51st edition. A Three-point Display featuring Shimpaku Juniper and privet, a competition where bonsai artists pit their skills against one another, and vendor stalls drawing dealers from across the country. Walking the venue, you come face to face with the quiet depth of beauty held in the palm of a hand.

A Universe in the Palm of Your Hand

Standing before a Shohin Bonsai, you may find yourself unable to move for a moment. Something so small, yet dense with the tree's passage of time. To condense everything into a size that fits in the palm of your hand — this is not a constraint, but a choice. There is a beauty that can only be reached by stripping away.

Gafu-ten is an exhibition devoted exclusively to Shohin Bonsai. This year marks its 51st edition. The fact that it has continued beyond that milestone of 50 speaks to the depth of this world.

Placing a Landscape on the Tokonoma

A Three-point Display using two trees — Shimpaku Juniper and privet. They are not simply arranged side by side. A hanging scroll is placed, and the entire space becomes a single 'landscape.'

The tree is not the protagonist — it is the atmosphere of the whole setting that speaks. This is called a tokonoma display. Only by knowing the fundamental forms does one's own interpretation begin to emerge — as if to say there is no individuality before form, the space asks its questions quietly.

A Place to Compete and Sharpen One Another

To expose one's skill and display to a public eye, and entrust it to others' judgment. To choose to be seen, without fear of being evaluated. That may be the true meaning of what an exhibition is.

Both the Shimpaku Juniper and the privet used in the Three-point Display are registered works in the Yuga Bonsai registry. Even in the world of Shohin, there is a will to name, record, and pass on what is excellent — and it is that structure which sustains this exhibition.

The Choosing Is Yours Alone

Trees line the vendor stalls. The space is designed not to prompt, but to allow visitors to choose at their own pace, of their own accord. Take in the exhibition, train your eye — and only then reach out your hand.

A discerning eye can only grow through looking. Walking through this exhibition may itself be the time set aside for just that.
