At the beginning of BONSAI JOURNEY, Koji Hiramatsu stands with 35 years of experience behind him. Bonsai is difficult — and yet within that depth lies something that enriches life. The starting point of this journey is held in a single word: not 'teach,' but 'share.'

Difficult — and worth facing

Bonsai is difficult — that word arrives head-on. When it comes from someone who has spent 35 years alongside trees, there is no excuse in it, no false modesty. Only the weight of all the time it took to get there.

To acknowledge the difficulty, and yet to wish sincerely to 'make it accessible' — when those two things stand side by side, something comes through. Only someone who knows the depths well can open a door to them without flattening them.

'Sharing' rather than 'teaching'

At the starting point of this journey, Sensei chose a single word. Not 'teach' — but 'share.'

Rather than handing knowledge across a one-way divide, as companions walking together through the world of bonsai, he is opening 35 years of accumulation. What was received from a teacher, learned from the trees, built up through repeated failure — the quiet wish to share that with someone is gently present in that choice of word.

Knowledge can be passed on; experience cannot. And yet, when Sensei chose the word 'share,' its meaning seems to seep through, little by little.

A life's work is not an ending

'Bonsai enriches life' — that single conviction is what moves this journey forward. Not the mastery of technique, but the time spent facing the tree itself — that is what brings something to a person. It is a conviction that has grown quietly over 35 years.

It takes the form of a school, but perhaps what it wants to deliver is not a manual. To sit before a tree, to hesitate, to choose, to wait — that accumulation changes you, almost without your noticing. Thirty-five years have taught exactly that.

The phrase 'a life's work of 35 years' sounds like a kind of milestone. But this is not an ending. What has grown within Sensei will bud within someone else, and continue on into the next stretch of time. Just as bonsai is passed down across generations, this journey too — as a journey without end — opens here, now.
