Repotting is the beginning of a tree's new journey. Deciding the front, securing with wire, packing the Potting Soil without gaps — the work of your hands today determines where the roots will grow from here. Consideration for what cannot yet be seen will reveal itself later.
When repotting is finished, almost nothing looks different. Soil goes in, water flows through. That is all.
And yet something has been decided inside the pot. Where gaps remain between the roots and the soil, no roots will grow. Put another way, new roots will only enter the spaces you carefully filled today.
Prodding with a bamboo skewer, settling the soil with a gentle shake, tapping quietly with a rubber mallet — all of that effort is directed toward eliminating empty space. It may look unremarkable, but this work decides the next year.
Securing the tree in the pot is not about protecting the tree as it is today.
If the fixing is Loose, every time the wind moves the tree, the new roots just beginning to extend will be damaged. Damaged new roots cannot achieve Establishment. The purpose of securing is to protect life that has not yet been born — bonsai work carries many such 'arrangements for the future' woven into it.
The same is true of the Potting Soil. Using clean soil with fine dust removed is not for today — it is so the roots can breathe from here on. Consideration for what cannot yet be seen will reveal itself later.
Before planting, turn the tree slowly. The Flow to the right, the spread of the Trunk Rise / Base — even if the Branch Structure is not yet refined, there is an angle at which this tree's beauty stands out most. Finding that angle is the first step, taken before a single scoop of soil goes in.
Deciding the front is the same as envisioning the finished form in your mind. A tree that flows to the right sits left of center in the pot. Only when the tree's movement and its open space answer each other does Pot Harmony come to life.
Invisible roots slowly extend, and a form not yet drawn begins to rise — Repotting is the quiet beginning of that journey.
