Choosing the right wire thickness is one of the first puzzles in Wiring. Half the branch diameter for Aluminum Wire, one-third for Copper Wire — these are guidelines, no more than a starting point. Every branch is different, and a personal feel for it grows gradually, through the hands.

Numbers as a doorway to developing your eye

The first thing that puzzles people about Wiring is choosing the right thickness. A common guideline is roughly half the branch diameter for Aluminum Wire, and roughly one-third for Copper Wire — always accompanied by the reminder that these are 'just starting points.'

Why does Copper Wire run thinner? Because at the same diameter it is stronger than aluminum — too thick, and it puts excessive force on the branch. Choosing a slightly thinner gauge creates just the right balance: enough to shape, without causing damage. Behind the numbers, there is always a reason.

What it means to keep saying 'just a guideline'

The phrase 'just a guideline' is repeated not to suggest you need not remember it.

Every branch is different. Two branches of the same thickness may be one supple, one stiff. Dry or full of moisture. The feel changes with the season and the condition of the tree. Wire is chosen by picking up that branch and entering into a dialogue with it. The figure of one-half is the starting point of that dialogue — the first foothold for developing your own eye to read a branch.

What a curved branch teaches you

When you keep a curved, living branch nearby to test against, the way the wire takes effect becomes visible. Because of the curve, you can sense where the force lands and where it slips away — learning it through the movement of your hands.

Knowing numbers and being able to read a branch are two different things. First you learn the numbers, then you touch the branch. Through that back-and-forth, a personal sense of measure grows, little by little. There is no need to rush. The branch is always there, waiting.
